Evansville Uses Big Inning To Win Day-Night Opener

EVANVILLE, Ind. - The Traverse City Beach Bums opened a day-night doubleheader with Evansville by falling 8-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Evansville picked up a first inning run against Beach Bums starter David Nathanson. Javier Brown capped a nine-pitch at bat with a double down the third base line. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on an infield single by Greg Alexander.

The Beach Bums were able to give David Nathanson his first lead of the season by scoring two runs in the top of the third. Brad Miller led off the inning by homering over the wall in left-center. Scott Billak followed by drawing a walk from Evansville starter John Ducey.

Chad Daleiden doubled off the wall in left to post his first pro hit with two outs in the bottom of the fourth for the Otters. He scored on an RBI single by Donald Brown to knot the score at 2-2.

David Nathanson could not make it out of the sixth inning as Evansville batted around and scored six runs to open an 8-2 lead. Josh Howard doubled home a pair, but the big blow came off the bat of Greg Alexander. Alexander greeted reliever Shawn Joy with a triple to left that came with the bases loaded. Nathanson took the loss, falling to 0-3. He tossed 5.1 innings and surrendered seven runs, all earned, on 12 hits. Nathanson lost just three games in all of 2008.

Traverse City finished with nine hits in the contest. Mike Epping was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple in addition to an RBI. Mike Victor and Bryan Frew also had a pair of hits for the Beach Bums.

The series with Evansville concludes later tonight with the second game of the day-night doubleheader at 7:05pm. RHP Kevin Reese (1-0, 4.91) will pitch for the Beach Bums opposite Evansville RHP Rashad Ford (0-1, 5.59). The contest can be heard on The Fox FM.
