Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS- On an overcast evening in Sioux Falls, the Sioux Falls Pheasants' bats could not keep up with the Kansas City T-Bones.
The T-Bones banged out 21 hits, including 12 extra-base hits, to drop the Pheasants 16-3 Tuesday at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Kansas City used to a five-run second inning to jump on Pheasants starter Kyle Ruwe (1-2), and they never looked back. Kala Ka'aihue led the assault, going 3-for-6 with two solo home runs. The T-Bones capped the night off with Ray Sadler's grand slam as part of a seven-run ninth.
"Mostly, I just chalk it up as a loss, said manager Steve Shirley, discussing what went wrong in the game. "You're not going to win a whole lot of games when you give up 16 runs."
The early runs were more than enough for T-Bones starter Reid Santos (4-2). The left-hander kept the Pheasants offense at bay for seven innings, giving up two runs while scattering 10 hits with five strikeouts.
Sioux Falls failed to capitalize on opportunities to get back into the game. The Pheasants had 12 hits of their own, but mustered just three runs. Gus Milner and Brandon Sing each had three hits in the game.
"We got our hits, we just didn't get the timely hits with guys on base," Milner said. "We're just waiting to put it all together."
The T-Bones roughed up Ruwe in the second. Ka'aihue hit a one-out, solo home run to give Kansas City its first run. With two outs, the T-Bones smacked five straight hits, including four consecutive doubles, to extend their early lead to 5-0.
Kansas City batted around again in the fourth. An RBI single by Jeff Hulett plated Aharon Eggleston before Chris Salberg replaced Ruwe with the bases loaded and one out. After Rico Washington struck out looking, Ray Sadler laced a two-run double to right-center field to give Kansas City an 8-0 advantage.
"We pitched well against them last night," Shirley said, referring to the 9-5 win on Monday. "Sometimes there are games that happen like this."
Milner's fifth-inning triple brought home Joe Anthonsen to score the first Pheasants run. Mark Shorey followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-2.
Ka'aihue hit his second solo bomb in the sixth. Aharon Eggleston went 4-for-5 with three doubles in the game.
Reliever Ryan Fleckenstein entered in the seventh and retired the next six batters. Francisco Leandro added an RBI double in the eighth.
Ruwe took the loss in just his third start with the team, giving up eight runs on 10 hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work.
The Pheasants and T-Bones return for game three in a matinee starting at 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, at Sioux Falls Stadium. It is Super Splash Day. There will be plenty of water activities for the youngsters.
