St. Paul Saints News Release
LINCOLN, NE (June 21, 2011) - Not even five errors could keep the St. Paul Saints from snapping their four game losing streak as they defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs 8-4 in game two of the double header on Tuesday night at Haymarket Park.
For an offense that has struggled for the better part of two weeks they came out swinging against Saltdogs starter Tommy Palica. In the first Justin Snyder singled with one out and Ole Sheldon doubled him home with two outs to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
In the second the Saints scored two more with two outs as Brandon Tripp was hit by a pitch and Ronnie Bourquin walked. Adam Frost singled up the middle to drive them both home and give the Saints a 3-0 lead.
They extended that lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Tripp doubled and Bourquin singled him home with one out.
An odd moment occurred in the top of the fifth inning with the Saints leading 4-1. Palica went out to the mound for his warm up tosses and his manager Marty Scott went out just before the inning started to take him out of the game. The reason: he had just been signed by the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Steve Junker relived Palica and the Saints got to him for two runs in the inning when Shane Costa doubled and Jason Cooper hit a two-run homer to right, his fifth of the season, to give the Saints a 6-1 lead.
Saints starter Jake Schmidt looked solid, but didn't get much help from his defense. He cruised through the first three innings, but in the fourth gave up a double to Curt Smith. Jorge Cortes then hit a grounder to first that caromed off Cooper's glove allowing Smith to score.
In the fifth with the Saints up 6-1 Gavin Dickey singled with one out. Phil Hawke then hit a pop up to third that Bourquin dropped. It proved costly as Smith singled home Dickey and Pat Trettel singled home Hawk to make it 6-3. Schmidt went 5.0 innings allowing three unearned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four to improve to 5-0 on the season.
The finale of the three game series is Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m. at Haymarket Park. The Saints send RHP Matt Long (4-2, 4.11) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Tim Brown (3-4, 4.25). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
