Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 3-2 to the Fort Worth Cats at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night.

Justin Murray allowed two earned runs on five hits over seven and two-thirds innings, but a two-out double from Trent Lockwood in the top of the eighth inning scored an unearned run that proved the difference in the game.

Wichita held a 2-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh when Lockwood drew a leadoff walk against Murray. After Marcos Rodriguez flied out to left field, John Allen singled to left, advancing Lockwood to second. Derek Kinzler hit a groundball to second base and beat out Josh Horn's relay to first on a potential double play to keep the inning alive. With runners on the corners and two outs, Cory Morales lined a single to right field that scored Lockwood and tied the game.

In the top of the eighth, Brian Fryer reached first on an error charged to Jorge Delgado to lead off the inning. Murray retired Travis Metcalf on a deep flyball to center, and after Fryer stole second base, Murray got Kelley Gulledge to line out to shortstop for the second out. Murray was then relieved by Eric Gilliland who allowed the double to left-center by Lockwood.

Nick DeBarr relieved Cats' starter Wade Mackey in the bottom of the eighth and retired the final six batters to face him, earning an extended save. Mackey and DeBarr combined to retire the final 11 Wingnuts' hitters.

Murray allowed three runs, two earned, in his seven and two-thirds while taking the loss. Murray walked three and struck out two.

Mackey earned the win, allowing two unearned runs in seven complete innings. Mackey yielded five hits, walked one, and struck out three.

The Wingnuts scored first in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Patterson led off with a double down the right field line. After a walk to Brent Clevlen, Juan Richardson hit a groundball to third. Metcalf recorded the force on Clevlen at second, but Kinzler's relay to first for a double play bounced by Lockwood at first. Patterson came around to score on the play.

The Cats tied the game in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Kinzler. Wichita re-gained the lead in the bottom half on a bunt play by Mike Conroy. Edwin Bellorin led off with a double and scored when Mackey threw Conroy's bunt to the left side of the mound into right field.

Jared Simont worked a scoreless top of the ninth in relief. Josh Workman's hitting streak ended at nine games.

The Wingnuts and Cats continue their series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Junior Guerra takes on left-hander Mike Bacsik. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
