EL PASO, Texas. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants cracked 13 hits and scored seven runs, but it was not enough in a 13-7 loss to the El Paso Diablos on Sunday night.
Reggie Abercrombie gave the Pheasants a 5-2 lead in the top of the third inning with a three-run home run, his eighth in 30 games, but El Paso scored twice in the bottom of the third and four times in the fourth to overtake the Birds for good.
Reid Fronk doubled in the go-ahead run for El Paso in the fourth and finished the night 3-for-5 with two doubles. Jermy Acey was 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI.
Tempers flared in the middle innings and the benches cleared twice after pitchers hit batters. Abercrombie was ejected in the top of the fifth inning, and Pheasants starter Pete Gehle (6-10) and manager Steve Shirley were tossed in the bottom of the fifth. El Paso starter Kevin Cooper (1-0) and manager Tim Johnson were also ejected.
El Paso scored four more runs in the seventh inning and one in the eighth to build a 13-5 lead. The Pheasants plated two in the top of the eighth, but could not pull any closer.
Trevor Lawhorn had three hits for the Pheasants and went 3-for-4. He now has 413 career hits with Sioux Falls, tied with Joe Anthonsen. Lawhorn could tie or surpass Felix Pagan's club record of 416 in Monday's season finale. (Anthonsen is not with the club for the final series of the year.)
Cory Morales also had three hits, and Jake Taylor had a pair of doubles.
