Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Lemurs scored five unanswered runs, including two in the ninth inning, to defeat the RailCats 6-5 on Sunday afternoon. The win clinched the South division title for Laredo. They will take on the Wichita Wingnuts in the first round of the American Association playoffs, beginning on Wednesday. The loss drops the RailCats record to 49-50 on the season with one game left to play.
Trailing 5-4 entering the ninth inning, Brian Peterson led off for Laredo with an infield single and was pinch-run for by Philip Incaviglia. Incaviglia stole second base, and then scored on Anthony Scelfo's double down the left field line. Scelfo moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Stephen Douglas' bloop single, giving Laredo the 6-5 lead.
The RailCats had a golden opportunity to tie it or win it in the bottom of the inning, as closer Mike Benacka walked the bases loaded with one out. However, he struck out Mike Massaro and Brian Kolb back-to-back to clinch the division as the Lemurs celebrated on the field.
John Allen hit a two-out RBI single in the first inning to give the Lemurs a 1-0 lead. The RailCats answered in the bottom of the frame, as Craig Maddox hit an RBI single to tie the game. Then with two on and two out, Eric Suttle sent a fly ball to left that Allen lost in the sun as it dropped for a two-run single to put the 'Cats on top 3-1.
The 'Cats added a run in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Craig Maddox to score Mike Massaro. Massaro matched the single-season club record of 75 runs, set by Adam Klein in 2011. In the fourth, Adam Klein hit a sac fly to score Trevor Willis and make it 5-1.
The Lemurs responded in the fifth inning on a two-run blast to left by Jimmy Mojica. The ball was ruled fair as it crossed the foul pole, while the RailCats argued the ball was foul to no avail. Brian Peterson hit an RBI double in the sixth to cut the 'Cats lead to 5-4.
RailCats starter Will Krout lasted five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. It snapped a streak of 13 straight starts of six or more innings for Krout. Marco Gonzalez (4-3) blew the save for the RailCats and took the loss.
The series finale is Monday night at 7:10 PM. It is the 100th and final regular season game for the RailCats. Stephen Hiscock (5-6, 3.26) will take the ball as the RailCats attempt to finish .500 on the season. It is Fan Appreciation Night on Labor Day Monday so fans who come to the park wearing a RailCats jersey will receive $2 off the price of admission.
