Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Fargo, N.D. - Despite holding the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to just six hits on Wednesday night, the Sioux Falls Pheasants came up on the short end of a 4-3 loss in Fargo.
The RedHawks (40-23) never trailed after Buddy Sosnoskie's two-run home run followed a leadoff walk from Pheasants starter Rod Scurry (3-5) in the first inning. After Scurry issued one more walk, he retired nine of the next 10 batters to keep the Pheasants (29-34) in the game.
Cristian Guerrero's two-out double shaved the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning, but Fargo-Moorhead added two runs in the bottom of the fourth on Jon Gaston's leadoff home run and Carlo Cota's two-out double.
Cory Morales singled and later scored the Pheasants' second run on an error in the sixth inning, and Al Quintana followed Ridge Carpenter's leadoff triple in the seventh with an RBI single to pull the Pheasants within one run.
Back-to-back, two-out singles from Quintana and Joe Anthonsen in ninth put the tying and go-ahead runs aboard, but RedHawks closer Tom Boleska induced Jonny Kaplan to ground out and end the game.
Boleska collected his league-leading 20th save, helping the first-place RedHawks become the first team to reach 40 wins this season. The RedHawks have won 31 of their last 37 games.
Al Quintana led the Pheasants' offense with a 3-for-4 performance. He doubled and collected his 21st RBI. Nicolas and Jared Bolden also had two-hit nights.
Tyler Herron (5-3) pitched six-plus innings on the way to his fourth consecutive win. He yielded three runs, two earned, on eight hits.
Rod Scurry (3-5) suffered the loss. He gave up four runs on six hits but matched a career-high with seven strikeouts. Dan Cooper and Jack Van Leur combined to shut out Fargo-Moorhead in the final two innings.
The conclusion of the three-game series is at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, in Fargo. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
