Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (37-27) defeated the Amarillo Sox (34-31) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednessday night.
Jessie Mier singled home the tying and winning runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to help Wichtia overcome a 6-5 deficit. Mike Conroy led off against Sox' closer chase Johnson, and nearly tied the game with a deep line drive down the right field line that hooked foul. After Johnson struck out Conroy, John Rodriguez reached first on an error by shortstop Garrett Rau. Johnson retired Jairo Perez for the second out of the inning on a deep line drive to left field. David Peralta kept Wichita alive with a groundball single through the left side that moved Rodriguez to second. Mark Wagner then legged out an infield single to shortstop that loaded the bases. Mier lined a single to right on an 0-1 count to drive in Rodriguez and Peralta.
The win gives Wichita back-to-back victories for the first time since June 27th and 28th.
Harrison Kain snapped a 5-5 tie in the top of the ninth inning with a one-out, solo home run to left off of Nick Walters.
Walters earned the win in relief, working two innings. Johnson took the loss for Amarillo.
The Sox opened a 4-0 lead after the top of the third. In the second, Tyler Goodro doubled to left field and scored two batters later on a two-out, ground rule double over the left field fence from starting pitcher Chuck Lofgren.
With first and second and one out in the third, Adam Buschini doubled down the left field line to drive in Kain with Amarillo's second run. A Tim Alberts sacrifice fly made it 3-0. Derrick Pyles added a two-out, line drive single to left to cap off the rally.
Wichita answered back with three runs in their half of the third. Singles from Conroy and Rodriguez gave the Wingnuts first and third with one out. A passed ball ushered in Conroy to cut the lead to 4-1. Perez walked to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Wagner knocked in Rodriguez with a double to right field. An error on the play by Pyles allowed Perez to score from first base.
Pyles extended the lead to 5-3 with an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth, but Mier doubled home Wagner from first base with two outs in the bottom of the inning to pull Wichita back within one run.
Ryan Khoury doubled to left-center with one out in the bottom of the sixth, took third on a single to left-center from Conroy, and scored the tying run when Rodriguez lined a single to center on an 0-2 pitch.
Ryan Hinson started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in six innings. Hinson walked four and struck out six.
Lofgren allowed one earned run on two hits in two and one-third innings before leaving in the bottom of the third with an injury. Lofgren walked two and struck out none in a no-decision.
Jared Simon pitched a scoreless relief inning for the Wingnuts. Peralta maintained an eight-game hitting streak with his ninth-inning single.
