Augusta Lynx News Release
Charleston, SC - Ryan Lang collected three assists and Jamie Johnson scored twice as the Augusta Lynx downed the South Carolina Stingrays 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Augusta started the scoring by recording a power play goal in its ninth consecutive contest at 10:36 of the opening frame. Joe Pereira redirected Lang's shot past the stick side of Davis Parley to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead. Derrick Byfuglien also notched an assist on the marker, Pereira's first of the year.
After a key South Carolina penalty kill with time winding down in the period, the Lynx struck for a late marker to make it 2-0 at intermission. Johnson took a J.B. Bittner pass as the Stingrays line and dug the puck out of his skates before threading his way through the South Carolina defense and deking his way past Parley for his fourth goal of the year with just 35.9 seconds remaining. Lang also added a helper, his second of the night.
After a scoreless second period, the offensive dam would burst in the third. Just 53 seconds into the final frame, Chris Chaput scored a power play goal to make it 2-1 and get South Carolina into the game.
Augusta responded when Bittner fed a streaking Johnson on a two-on-one at 4:30 for a 3-1 lead, but the Stingrays would not go quietly.
First, Cam McCaffrey shoveled the puck home in a goalmouth scramble to make it 3-2, and then with just 1:26 remaining and the Lynx shorthanded in a five-on-three situation, Evan Schwabe scored the game-tying goal to push the contest past regulation.
No scoring in overtime led to a shootout that went eight rounds. Joe Cardarelli marked in round two for the Lynx, followed by Dirk Southern's must-score effort in round six. Finally, after Dave McKee stopped Ryan Bennett in round eight, Pereira sent the Lynx home happy as he tucked the puck five-hole on Parley to end the sudden death situation.
McKee finished with six saves on eight shootout attempts and a total of 41 saves through overtime for his seventh win of the year. Parley finished with 36 saves in taking the loss.
Augusta will face Texas in a pair of games this weekend, at 8:35 pm Friday and 8:05 pm Saturday night. The Classic Stucco and Stone Pre-Game Show kicks off one half-hour before faceoff on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
