Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels fell to the Peoria Chiefs on Wednesday night, 8-7, in 10 innings.

All nine batters came to the plate in the top of the 1st for Peoria. Three runs were pushed across on three hits to go along with three walks. Kernels starter Christian Powell did limit the damage in the frame, however, as he struck out Ildemaro Vargas and induced Gerwuins Velazco to ground to shortstop with the bases loaded and one out.

The Chiefs scored a run in the 2nd on an RBI single by Jacob Wilson that pushed the lead to 4-0.

A 2-RBI single by Jeremias Pineda and a 2-RBI double by Jorge Polanco tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the 2nd.

Velazco doubled to lead off the 4th and later scored on an RBI double by Wilson, who finished 3-for-5 with 2 RBI on the night.

One inning later, Mike Gonzales powered a leadoff home run to left field to tie the contest at 5. The homer is the first for Gonzales as a Kernel and he is 5-for-12 since being assigned to the team on July 20.

That score held until the 7th when Patrick Wisdom scored on an error by Joel Licon at second and Breyvic Valera scored on a sacrifice fly by Vargas made it a 7-5 Chiefs lead.

In the bottom half, Adam Brett Walker narrowed the lead with an RBI single and Travis Harrison tied the game at 7 with an RBI single of his own. With the bases loaded an no outs following the pair of hits, Max Kepler struck out and Licon lined into a double play as the Chiefs stymied the rally.

Wilson hit a 2-out double in the 10th and scored one batter later on an RBI single by Jeremy Schaffer. Trailing by one, the Kernels did not threaten in their bottom half of the 10th.

Powell exited after 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while walking five and striking out two. Hudson Boyd entered, giving up two runs in 1.2 innings. Madison Boer also threw 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.

Brad Gilbert (0-1) allowed one run in the 9th and 10th innings. Gilbert is the first 2013 Twins draftee to appear for the Kernels. The right-hander was a 7th round selection out of Seton Hall.

Chiefs starter Kyle Helisek pitched into the 3rd, but left after 2 innings to his name. Helisek allowed four runs (none earned) while walking a season-high five and striking out three. Relievers Joe Donofrio and Sam Tuivailala combined for four innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Thomas Lee (3-1) pitched three scoreless, allowing no runs on three hits while walking none and striking out two. Zach Russell allowed two base runners, but ultimately recorded his 4th of the season to close the game.
