Burlington Bees News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits used a five-run second inning to defeat the Burlington Bees 8-5 in the opener of a three-game series at Community Field.
Wade Hinkle belted a two-run home run in the first to get the Bees (38-58, 12-19) out to an early 2-0 lead, but Pat Lowery (3-6) could not get out of the second, allowing five runs, which left a deficit that was too much to overcome.
Lowery tossed a perfect first, but in the second, he issued back-to-back walks to Bobby Borchering and Jesse Wierzbicki. Rio Ruiz tripled both men home to tie the game. Ruiz scored when the next batter, Roberto Pena, reached on an infield single. Lowery got the next two outs, but Teoscar Hernandez hit his eighth home run of the season to put the River Bandits (55-44, 17-13) ahead 5-2 after an inning and a half.
Lance McCullers (5-5) settled down after allowing two runs in the first, tossing four consecutive scoreless innings. He loaded the bases in the third, hitting Andrew Ray and walking Hinkle and Zach Wright, but he struck out Exicardo Cayones to end the Bees' threat.
Daniel Hurtado was sensational in relief of Lowery, allowing one run in 4.1 innings. The only run came across in the seventh, when he allowed a leadoff double to Pena and was pulled for Austin Adams. Adams surrendered a single to Dan Gulbransen that scored Pena. He allowed one more run in the inning to put Quad Cities ahead 7-2.
The Bees attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases on a single and two walks. Sherman Johnson walked with the bases loaded to bring home a run. Juri Perez was pulled for Gerardo Sanchez, who proceeded to get the next three outs, only allowing one more run to score.
Burlington will take on Quad Cities on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at Community Field. Tyler DeLoach, who is coming off a 12-strikeout performance will take on Mark Appel, the #1 overall pick in the 2013 draft.
