Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Renato Nunez whalloped two home runs and drove in four as the Beloit Snappers defeated rehabbing Chicago Cubs pitcher Scott Baker and the Kane County Cougars by a 5-1 score in Midwest League action at Pohlman Field with 1,016 in attendance.
The Snappers second straight win gives them a record of 62-39 (19-12 in the second half). The Cougars second straight loss puts their record at 37-59 (7-23 in the second half).
Nunez's (2-3, 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, 2 runs) first clout came in the first inning when he took a Baker (2-2) offering over the left field wall for an early 2-0 lead, his 14th of the year. "It was a two-strike pitch," said Nunez. "He threw me a fastball inside and I just tried to make contact."
The Snappers increased their lead to 3-0 in the third when Daniel Robertson doubled and Christopher Bostick singled him in. Two innings later, Nunez supplied his second round-tripper of the evening banging a ball off the scoreboard in left-center. His 15th homer of the season upped the lead to 5-0. "This is the first time in my career I've hit two home runs in a game," he said.
Meanwhile, Beloit's starting pitcher Seth Streich (10-5) was mowing down Kane County's hitters. Streich began his night by retiring the first 13 hitters. He would set down the side in order in five of his seven innings. Streich would allow only one run on six hits over seven innings. He struck six batters without issuing a walk. The one run Kane County picked up off of Streich came in the seventh on an RBI double by Reggie Golden (2-4, RBI). "In the second half of the year," said Streich, "I've been more consistent with my approach. I've been persistent with my work ethic and my preparation. I'm trusting that the work I put in on a day-to-day basis will be enough on a particular day." Streich's tenth win of the season ties him for the league lead. "Getting to ten wins isn't a credit to me as much as it's a credit to the Beloit Snappers," said Streich, "and the hitters and the fielding I have behind me."
Kris Hall was given the responsibility of sealing the deal and he did so with a pair of solid innings. Hall struck out three and didn't allow a run, closing the door on the evening with a 1-2-3 ninth.
On Thursday, the Snappers and the Cougars will play game two of this series, with the start time at 7:00pm. Thursday's pitching match-up will be RHP Vince Voiro (5-4, 3.87 ERA) for the Snappers and RHP Michael Heesch (3-8, 3.56 ERA) for the Cougars. Thursday at Pohlman Field means Snappy Hour, providing fans the chance to grab eight ounce drafts of Miller Lite for $1 at the Firehouse Grill and small sodas for $1 at the main stand. Check out the Sud's O'Hanahan's Bullpen Deck and the Miller "On Deck" for 12 ounce mixed drinks priced at $3.
