Pens Earn Dramatic OT Win over Americans
October 26, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - After the Rochester Americans scored two extra attacker goals to force overtime, Paul Thompson potted the game-winner with 13.7 seconds left in the extra period to give the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 5-4 victory and their first win of the season.
Holding a 3-2 edge with five minutes remaining, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton seemingly put the game away when Brian Gibbons put his team up two with his first goal of the season.
The Americans came roaring back in the final two minutes of regulation, scoring twice in a 44 second span with their net empty and an extra attacker. Kevin Porter's rebound goal cut the Penguins' lead to one before Mark Mancari unbelievably knotted the contest with less just over a half minute left.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would still find a way to victory thanks to Thompson's heroics. From deep in his own zone, Simon Despres fired a breakaway pass to Thompson, who raced in and tucked a backhand shot over the leg pad of Amerks goalie David Leggio.
Thompson also added an assist earlier in the contest for a three-point night. Penguins goalie Brad Thiessen made 30 saves through overtime to earn the win.
Only 38 seconds had ticked off the clock when Rochester took a 1-0 lead as Luke Adam beat Thiessen with a stuff shot inside the right post.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would respond on the power play midway through the same period when Paul Thompson had his initial shot stopped, but lifted the rebound over the arm of Leggio.
With the score tied, 1-1, in the middle frame, the Penguins took their first lead since the second period of their season opener at Binghamton. A point shot from Joey Mormina caromed off of a body in front and found Warren Peters in the slot for a backhander to the back of the net.
That lead lasted just 3:40 with Rochester pulling even on a tip goal by Evan Rankin.
The Penguins take to the road on Saturday, Oct. 27 to battle the Syracuse Crunch at 7:30PM. Individual seats for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com, and by calling 800-745-3000.
