Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA (Friday, April 4, 2003) - Ross Lupaschuk scored the game-winner, Matt Murley added some insurance in the waning moments, and goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin stopped all 23 shots he faced as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins blanked the Norfolk Admirals, 2-0, at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza.
Lupaschuk's goal came midway through the first period with both teams playing at even strength.
Center Toby Petersen took the puck across the blue line. As he approached the left face-off circle, he slid a pass in front of the net, and Lupaschuk went top shelf to beat goalie Craig Andersson to the glove side.
While Lupaschuk's tally went in the books as the deciding goal, it was Aubin who deserved most of the credit for the win.
After allowing only one goal against the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks this past Wednesday, the Pens netminder looked even better on Friday.
He simply baffled the Admirals for all 60 minutes, helped to kill off all three of their power plays and earned his eighth win of the season with the AHL Pens.
Aubin didn't even need the goal that Murley gave him in the closing seconds. Of course, the Pens' rookie left wing did not mind sticking one in the open net to get his 21st tally of the season. Ross Lupaschuk tallied the game-winner Friday against the Admirals Murley's goal capped off a huge win for the Pens. Then again, every win is huge this time of year.
With only two contests remaining on the 2002-03 regular season, the Pens need every victory they can get. The boys still have an outside shot at moving as high as sixth place in the Western Conference.
Of course, a few losses could spell disaster. But Aubin does not seem ready to let that happen.
With Friday's win, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton broke a team record for home victories in a season (21). Just one more win will tie the club record for total triumphs in a season. The team's record currently sits at 35-32-6-5, and they have a mark of 21-15-1-2 at First Union Arena.
The Penguins have now won six out of nine contests against the Admirals this season. These two teams will wrap up their 10-game season series Saturday night at First Union Arena. Game time is set for 7:05 PM, and gates will open at 5:30.
