Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - For the second night in a row, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins used the shootout to skate to victory, defeating the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 5-4, on Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena. It was the Penguins league-leading 23rd road win of the year.
With the score tied, 2-2, Justin DiBenedetto put the Sound Tigers up just 1:17 into the third period, but it took only nine seconds for the Penguins to even the contest.
Right off the following face-off, Ben Street raced down the ice and lifted a backhander over Sound Tigers goaltender Kevin Poulin.
Street struck again five minutes later on the power play when he took Brian Gibbons' centering pass and ripped his 22nd goal of the season to the back of the net.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would be unable to hold on for the regulation win as Rhett Rakhshani scored with the extra-attacker with just 80 seconds remaining in the third period.
After the overtime period, Scott Munroe was a perfect 4-for-4 in shootout for the Penguins, while Cal O'Reilly and Colin McDonald converted for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
The Penguins took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the first period on a 5-on-4 advantage. Jason Williams had his shot go off a Sound Tigers' stick directly to McDonald who lifted his 13th of the season to the top of the cage.
Three minutes after McDonald's tally, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton raised the lead to two when Poulin got a shoulder on Geoff Walker's bid, but Nick Petersen tapped in the rebound for his ninth of the year.
Bridgeport battled back to even the contest with two quick goals in the second frame. Munroe denied Kael Mouillierat's initial shot with an arm save, but Tony Romano was able to dump in the rebound at 14:43 of the period.
Tyler McNeely then made the score 2-2 thirty-seven seconds later with a wrist shot that snuck through the leg pads of Munroe. Munroe (15-5-3) stopped 33 out of 37 shots through overtime.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins wrap up their weekend of play on Sunday, March 11 at 3:00 PM against the Springfield Falcons. For more information, call the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
