Penguins (AHL) Sign Defenseman Dave Karpa

WILKES-BARRE, PA. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins today signed defenseman Dave Karpa to a 25-game tryout contract. The announcement was made by Penguins' team president Jeff Barrett.

Karpa, 32, split the 2002-03 season between the New York Rangers and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. In 19 games with the Rangers, he recorded two assists and 14 penalty minutes, while posting seven assists and 70 penalty minutes in 34 games with the Wolf Pack.

The 6-1, 210-pound native of Regina, Saskatchewan has recorded 98 points (18+80) and 1,374 penalty minutes in 557 career games with Quebec, Anaheim, Carolina and the New York Rangers.

During his 13-year pro career, Karpa has played in 114 career games in the AHL with Halifax, Cornwall and Hartford, recording 40 points (4+36) and 260 penalty minutes.

Karpa was selected by the Quebec Nordiques in the fourth round (68TH overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.

The Penguins (7-6-1-1, 16 pts; 4TH -place, East Division) begin a three-game homestand on Friday as they host the Hershey Bears (9-3-2-2; 22 pts; T-1ST -Place, East Division) at 7:05 p.m. at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
