November 19, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
The Hamilton Bulldogs announced today the hockey club in cooperation with the City of Hamilton will honour the 'HEROES OF HOMETOWN HOCKEY' in a special tribute prior to the Bulldogs' Friday, March 26th home game versus the St. John's Maple Leafs at Copps Coliseum.
"The Bulldogs organization is thrilled to be able to participate in such a meaningful way to celebrate professional hockey in Hamilton," said Bulldogs president, Steve Katzman. "While Hometown Hockey clearly demonstrates that the Bulldogs hockey club and organization are an integral part of the Hamilton community; Hometown Hockey also celebrates those Hamilton individuals who have had outstanding careers in the game of hockey."
To be considered one of the 'Heroes of Hometown Hockey' the selected players, coaches, officials and builders must have been born in the Hamilton area or made significant contributions to hockey in the Hamilton area, and had at least two years experience in the National Hockey League.
The pre-game tribute on March 26th will include an introduction of the 'Heroes of Hometown Hockey', a video presentation, and the naming of Hamilton's 'All-Time Team', which Hamilton hockey fans will have the opportunity to vote for in the coming weeks. All Bulldogs players will wear special 'Heroes of Hometown Hockey' jerseys to commemorate the evening.
A number of Hamiltonians, who played a significant role in the National Hockey League have already committed to attending the event including 'Heroes of Hometown Hockey' co-chairmen Harry Howell and Ric Nattress. Howell was a Hall-of-Fame defenceman, who played 17 seasons in the NHL and won the Norris Trophy in 1967. Nattress, a veteran of 536 National Hockey League games, won the Stanley Cup while playing for the Calgary Flames in 1989.
"It's great to be involved in this evening, especially because Hamilton is where I was born and still reside," said former New York Rangers All-Star defenceman Harry Howell.
Ric Nattress, who was the Montreal Canadiens second round pick in the 1980 NHL Draft stated, "personally I think it is a great initiative by the Hamilton Bulldogs to show people how much great hockey has came from the Hamilton area. As well, the night will recognize the many contributors who have made Hamilton hockey special."
Former Hamilton area referees Bill Friday and Bob Myers, who combined have officiated close to 3,000 professional hockey games, will be among the many to be honoured as 'Heroes of Hometown Hockey'.
