Myrtle Musings...

Comeback Kids Strike Again...Myrtle Beach used another late rally to claim its second straight win in this series, scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good in a 6-4 victory just an evening after two runs in the bottom of the eighth led to a 4-3 victory. Winston-Salem's Daron Roberts gave the Warthogs a 3-2 advantage in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom of the frame the Pelicans used a sacrifice fly from DH Roberto Alvarez to tie the game and RF Quentin Davis followed with a stand-up RBI triple to give the lead back to Myrtle Beach. C Jerry Verastegui then added an insurance run with an RBI fielder's choice later in the inning. Rocky Top...The home faithful got their first look at Pelicans starter Deunte Heath last night, and the University of Tennessee product impressed with a quality start while earning his first Carolina League win. Heath allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings, while allowing one walk and striking out two. He also continued to make big pitches at big times, stranding four runners in scoring position over a three-inning stretch from the third through the fifth. This performance followed his debut start in Potomac last week in which he stranded six men in scoring position in five innings of work.

Still Streaking...The good times continue to roll for Roberto Alvarez, as he led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double to right-center to extend his career-high hitting streak to 14 games. Alvarez has now matched the 14-game run put together by SS Elvis Andrus at the beginning of the second half as the longest for a Pelican in 2007, and a knock this evening would match the 15-game streak Steven Doetsch had back in 2005 as the fourth-longest in franchise history. Alvarez is hitting .400 (22-55) over his streak with two home runs, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored, and has raised his average 35 points from .241 to .276 over the last two weeks.

Unflappable...Closer Sung Ki Jung had to survive some trouble last night, but still recorded the final three outs for his 12 save in 14 chances. A hit batter, an error and a bloop single loaded the bases for Winston-Salem with only one out and brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate, and Jung then threw a wild pitch to score a run and move the two tying runs into scoring position. Undeterred however, Jung struck out Robert Hudson and Micah Schnurstein to end the game, the latter ranking in the top-five in the league with 17 home runs and 53 RBI. Jung now ranks fifth in the league in saves.
