MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Clayton Richard retired the first 10 hitters he faced and worked into the eighth inning as Winston-Salem rebounded for a 3-1 victory over Myrtle Beach before 3,044 fans at Coastal Federal Field Friday night. The Warthogs improved to 8-13 in the second half and 46-44 overall, while the Pelicans fell to 11-10 and 41-49.

Dustin Evans got the start for Myrtle Beach and looked strong early, working perfect innings in both of the first two frames. In the top of the third hot-hitting Javier Castillo led off with a single however, and after stealing second base scored on C.J. Lang's RBI single to center. Then in the fourth Evans recorded the first two outs before walking David Cook to extend the inning, and Daron Roberts followed with a flare into right field. Quentin Davis came up throwing as Cook streaked for third, but Davis's throw skipped past Eric Campbell at the bag and Cook scrambled to his feet and raced home to make it 2-0. Micah Schnurstein added a solo home run, his 18th of the year, in the sixth.

The Pelicans had some chances in the middle innings, but couldn't get a big hit when they needed one. Myrtle Beach left runners on the corners in both the fourth and fifth innings, and then stranded men at first and second in the sixth. Finally in the eighth Jordan Schafer led off with a single and stole second base, and with two away Matt Young dropped an RBI single into center field to cut the margin to 3-1. That brought Roberto Alvarez to the plate as the potential go-ahead run, but reliever John Wesley struck him out swinging to end the inning and the Pelicans went in order in the ninth.

Richard (6-6) went seven-plus innings for the win, allowing just a run on six hits. He walked two and struck out three. Evans (1-5) threw the ball well in his second start off the disabled list but took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out three. Wesley got the final six outs for his fifth save. Young, the former University of New Mexico standout, went 2-4 for the second straight night and extended his hitting streak to seven games, while Alvarez reached on an infield single in the fifth to extend his career-high hitting streak to 15 games. The streak is the longest for a Pelicans player this year and longest current streak in the Carolina League, and matches the 15-game run Steven Doetsch put together in 2005 for the fourth-longest in franchise history. J.C. Holt set the franchise record with a 20-game hitting streak last season.

The finale of this four-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday. Left-hander Jonny Venters (2-3, 3.08 ERA) will start for Myrtle Beach while Winston-Salem send Kyle McCulloch (7-6, 3.61 ERA), and the first 1,000 fans will receive a free Pelicans team stone courtesy of the Holiday Inn Express at Broadway at the Beach. The game broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
