Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, scored one run in the eighth inning Friday night against Kinston to secure a 1-0 win over the Indians on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Sergio Perez threw six scoreless innings in his start for Salem.

Both Perez and Kinston starter Ryan Edell departed after six innings. Erik Stiller replaced Edell in the seventh. The first batter he faced, Billy Hart, tripled to right field. Next, Justin Tellam walked on five pitches-just the fifth walk of the season from Stiller. Then, Mark Ori pinch hit for Eric King and rolled a ball to second. Kinston's Brian Finegan began a 4-6-3 double play that scored Hart for a 1-0 Salem lead.

Ryan McKeller put in two innings of scoreless relief to get the Avalanche into the ninth inning. In the frame, closer Sammy Gervacio allowed a leadoff single to Mike Butia then struck out the next three batters to cement his 14th save of the season.

As for Perez, he allowed six base runners in six innings. He struck five batters out compared to three walks, all of which came in the first two innings.

Salem is now 7-2 in shutouts this season. It was the second time this year that the Avs blanked the Indians.

Saturday's final game allows the Avalanche a chance to even the series with Kinston through 14 games. Lefty Chris Salamida goes against Kinston's Kevin Dixon.
