Clayton Richard Carries the Warthogs to a 3-1 Win Over Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - After Winston-Salem had dropped five of their last six games, Warthogs starting pitcher Clayton Richard got the team back on track with a masterful performance in a 3-1 win over Myrtle Beach on Friday night. Richard (6-6)tossed seven innings and held the Pelicans to one run on six hits with three strikeouts to earn the win. Only three of the 21 outs recorded by Richard were on fly balls. In his two starts at Coastal Federal Field this season, Richard has limited Myrtle Beach to one run in 16 innings having won both outings.

For the third consecutive game, the Warthogs took an early lead as C.J Lang lined an RBI single up the middle that scored Javier Castillo from second base to give the Warthogs a 1-0 lead. Winston-Salem added a run in the fourth inning when David Cook walked and Daron Roberts followed with a single. Pelican's right fielder Quentin Davis unleashed a wild throw to third base on the hit, which allowed Cook to score giving Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead.

Micah Schnurstein extended the Warthogs lead to 3-0 with a solo home run to start the sixth inning. Its was Schnurstein's first deep ball since June 25 and gave him 17 for the year, which is one behind league leader Isaiah Ka'aihue of Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans scored for the first time in the eighth inning when Matt Young dropped an RBI single in center field to score Jordan Schafer to cut the Warthogs lead to 3-1.

Dustin Evans (1-5), who is working his way back from shoulder tendonitis, only last four innings and allowed two runs in taking the loss for Myrtle Beach. John Wesley tossed the final two innings and struck out four to collect his fifth save of the season.

The Warthogs and Pelicans wrap up their four-game series on Saturday, July 14 at Coastal Federal Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 PM and Winston-Salem will send RHP Kyle McCulloch to the mound. Myrtle Beach will counter with LHP Johnny Venters.
