Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche (811), Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, squared its four-game set with first-place Kinston (11-7) Thursday night with a 5-1 win on LewisGale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Mitch Einertson finished the game three-for-four with a home run and three RBI In the first, leadoff man Wladimir Sutil walked against Indian righthander Frank Herrmann. After Osvaldo Fernando grounded back to the pitcher, Einertson pounced on a 3-0 pitch and propelled it over the left field fence for his seventh home run of the season. Kinston attacked Salem righty Brad James in the third inning. Jose Constanza led the frame off with a single, After Brian Finegan flied out and John Drennen walked on four pitches, Max Ramirez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, The next batter, though, Wes Hodges, bounced into a double play first-to-short-to-pitcher and the inning ended. It was the second double play of the night that James coaxed. Salem padded the lead in the fourth inning against Herrmann. Mark Ori walked to begin the offensive. Then, Chris Johnson doubled to right and Ori came home. After Ryan Reed and Orlando Rosales bounced out, Cesar Quintero seared a 1-2 pitch into center field to push the advantage to 4-0. The final run came across when Einertson doubled Osvaldo Fernando home in the fifth. James went eight innings for the Avs, the second-longest start of his career. He allowed seven hits and just one run for his ninth victory of the year.
B.J. and the Indian: Avalanche righty Brad James tossed eight innings of one-run baseball last night in Salem's 5-1 victory over the Kinston Indians. It was his longest start of the season and the second-longest of his career. He lasted eight innings and a third on July 7th of â06 with Lexington and carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning. Former Winston-Salem outfielder Aaron Cunningham homered with one out in the ninth to push James out of that game.
Billy Hartman, Billy Hartman: Avalanche infielder Billy Hart did not play yesterday, holding his hit streak at eight games. That's his longest string of the season and his longest a Salem player in two years. He's scored a run in five of six starts. Hart is 33-100 (.330
Nine is Enough: Orlando Rosales had his nine-game hit chain ended with an 0-for-1 last night. Rosales entered the game in right field as a defensive replacement for Ryan Reed.
Thursdays of our Lives: The Avalanche won its 10th game of the season on a Thursday yesterday. Salem has its highest victory total on any given day on Thursday.
Cesar's Challenge: Avalanche outfielder Cesar Quintero singled Chris Johnson home in the fourth inning yesterday for his 24th RBI of his 29-game Salem career. He had 25 RBI in 54 games with Lexington this season. Quintero has driven at least one teammate home in seven of the past 10 games.
Homer Improvement: Mitch Einertson's two-run shot in the first inning yesterday gave Salem the lead for good. The Avs have hit at least one home run in five straight games, their longest streak of the year. Salem has 11 second-half home runs in 19 games (.58 per) compared to 36 before the break in 69 games (.52 per).
