Pelicans Eyeing Return To Postseason

August 25, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - With only 12 games remaining on the 2009 regular season schedule, the Pelicans sit just one game back of the Carolina League Southern Division's wild card spot. Myrtle Beach is tied with the Kinston Indians for third in the division with less than two weeks to go. Both the Pelicans and the Indians sit just one game back in the wild card race and only two and a half games back of the division leading Winston-Salem Dash.

The Dash took home the first-half title, and a repeat half championship will force a wild card berth. In the event that happens, the second place team in the second half will earn the wild card spot and advance to play the Dash in the Carolina League Playoffs.

Myrtle Beach has started to come alive offensively lately led by Donell Linares, who entered Tuesday night hitting .353 with four home runs over his last 10 games. Cole Miles has also helped out at the plate in the month of August. Through 21 August games, Miles is batting .347 with a team-leading three steals and an on-base percentage of .420, also tops on the squad. The Pelicans also have the Carolina League's home run leader on their side as well. Cody Johnson has blasted 30 big flies this season and has already shattered the club's single-season record and now sits just five homers shy of tying the team's career long ball mark.

Following the current homestand, the Birds will travel to Frederick for three games over the weekend. The Pelicans have struggled overall against the Keys this season going just 6-11 so far, but the Pelicans just took two out of three from Frederick from August 21-23 in Myrtle Beach. Following three with the Keys, Myrtle Beach will stop in Wilmington for four games with the Blue Rocks. The Pelicans own their best record against any Carolina League foe in 2009 versus the Blue Rocks, taking nine of the clubs' 17 total meetings this year. Wilmington currently owns the league's best overall record in at 74-51.

The Pelicans will close out the regular season with four pivotal games with the Winston-Salem Dash that could likely determine the Pelicans' postseason fate. The wraparound series with the Dash at BB&T Coastal Field will go from Friday, September 4 through Monday, September 7 to close out the regular season. Fireworks will follow the final two games of the season on September 6 and 7. Tickets are available for all remaining games by calling the Pelicans box office at (843) 918-6000 or online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
