Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Derrick Robinson belted a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie and lead Wilmington to a 4-3 victory over Lynchburg at City Stadium Tuesday night. The Hillcats will try to bounce back with a win when the two teams meet in game three of the four-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
The Blue Rocks (37-20, 75-51) struck first with a run in the opening frame. Johnny Giavotella smacked a one-out solo home run off Lynchburg starter Ronald Uviedo to put Wilmington in front 1-0.
Lynchburg immediately answered with a run in the bottom of the first. Chase d'Arnaud hit a leadoff double off Blue Rocks starter Danny Duffy and reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Harrison. Jordy Mercer followed with an RBI single that plated d'Arnaud and knotted the score at 1-1.
The Cats (24-34, 69-58) grabbed their first lead of the series in the bottom of the third. d'Arnaud roped a leadoff triple off Duffy. Duffy nearly worked out of the jam without allowing a run to score as he retired Harrison and picked off Mercer after the Cats third baseman reached on a fielder's choice. But Jamie Romak delivered an RBI single that scored d'Arnaud and gave Lynchburg a 2-1 advantage.
Lynchburg's lead was short-lived as Uviedo surrendered a leadoff home run to Clint Robinson in the top of the fourth, which tied the game at 2-2.
The game remained deadlocked at 2-2 until the seventh. Nate Adcock, who came on in relief of Uviedo in the sixth, retired the first two batters he faced in the seventh before issuing a walk to Anthony Seratelli. After Seratelli wiped second base, Robinson crushed a 3-2 offering from Adcock over the right field wall to give the Blue Rocks a 4-2 edge.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, d'Arnaud ripped a Zach Peterson pitch to left field. But Paulo Orlando scaled the wall and made a fantastic catch to rob d'Arnaud of extra bases keep the momentum on Wilmington's side.
Brandon Sisk tossed a scoreless inning in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory for Wilmington. Lynchburg outhit the Blue Rocks for the second straight game. But the Cats struggled with timely hitting by going 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position. Through the first two games of the series, Lynchburg is 4-for-31 with men in scoring position.
Duffy (9-3) limited Lynchburg to two runs on seven hits in six innings of work and earned the win. Adcock (3-1) allowed two earned runs in four innings pitched and was charged with the loss. Sisk picked up his 18th save of the season.
The Cats will take on the Blue Rocks in game three of the four-game set on Wednesday night at City Stadium. Lynchburg will send LHP Jeff Locke (4-8, 5.04 ERA) to the mound while Wilmington is expected to counter with LHP Michael Montgomery (2-1, 2.70 ERA). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
