Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (August 25, 2009)-Trailing for most of the night, the Red Sox scored three in the bottom of the eighth to jump ahead, then survived a Dash rally in the top of the ninth to prevail 4-3. Light-hitting second-baseman Luis Segovia was the offensive hero, finishing 3-4 with two doubles and three RBI, including a two-run, two-bagger with two down in the eighth that broke a 2-2 tie off Charlis Burdie. That came immediately after Will Vazquez, who went 2-4 from the eight spot in the order, drove in the tying run with a bases loaded RBI chopper to third. The bottom two spots in the lineup went 5-8 with all four RBI, ascending the Red Sox into sole possession of the wild card lead since Kinston and Myrtle Beach both lost. With the win, the Red Sox also inch to within a game and a half of the first place Dash.

Each starter pitched well, but neither factored in the decision. Justin Edwards left with a 2-1 lead after throwing six strong innings, yielding eight hits and one run. Dave McKae allowed two runs, both with two outs in the second, but kept the Red Sox in the game with a quality start himself. McKae only struck out one, but did not walk anyone.

Segovia put the Sox on the board in the last of the fourth when his two-run double off Edwards made it a 2-1 game. The Red Sox had multiple baserunners aboard in five of the first six innings, but they consistently stranded batches of opportunities, leaving eight runners on base in the ballgame.

Burdie retired the first three batters he faced in relief by throwing a perfect seventh, but the Red Sox, trailing 2-1 into the eighth, rallied to take the lead. Following a leadoff walk to Brad Correll, Anthony Rizzo singled to move Correll to second. David Mailman's bunt attempt was unsuccessful as he popped to the mound, but Chih-Hsien Chiang, pinch-hitting for Zach Borowiak, drew a walk to load the bases for Vazquez. An RBI ground-out tied it and paved the way for Segovia's clutch liner into the right field corner that put Salem on top for the first time. Segovia actually slid safely into third, but his momentum pushed his body past the base and he was tagged out to end the inning with the Sox on top 4-2.

Kyle Fernandes, already the owner of two scoreless frames out of the pen, surrendered back-to-back singles to open the ninth before giving way to Robert Coello. Coello earned his second save of the year, striking out two and inducing a fly-out to left field to end the game and preserve the victory for the Red Sox. Fernandes owned the win, improving to 5-3, while Burdie fell to 2-1 in absorbing the loss.

Salem won on Tuesday despite making three errors to Winston's zero. All Red Sox miscues occurred in the first two innings, with Rizzo, Segovia, and Borowiak all being charged with errors, but Salem overcame the sloppiness and hung on.

The Red Sox and Dash meet again in game three of the four game set on Wednesday evening, with Eammon Portice set to tangle with Miguel Socolovich. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at Lewis-Gale Field.
