K-Tribe Game Notes August 25th

August 25, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Kinston Indians News Release

Tribe Talk....

Playoff Picture - The K-Tribe's three straight losses have tightened up the playoff race. Kinston is now in a three way tie with both Salem and Myrtle Beach in the Wild Card chase for the final playoff spot in the Carolina League Southern Division with 13 games to play. The good news for Kinston is they have won the season series and have the tie break with both Salem (11-9) and Myrtle Beach (11-8). The K-Tribe is also just a 2 ½ games back of Winston-Salem for first place in the division.

A Case of the Monday's - The K-Tribe is just 3-8 on Monday this season, their worst record of any day of the week this season. Maybe they just haven't had enough practice on the first day of the week, Kinston has had seven off days on Monday this season, and last night's game is in a stretch of not playing on three of four Mondays! Sunday is the only day of the week Kinston has a winning record on. They are 10-9 on Sundays this season.

Don't Cut This Cord - Speaking of Defense, Kinston's Cord Phelps leads second basemen in the Carolina League with a .992 fielding percentage, having committed just four errors in 104 games his season (505 chances). Cord is also a big contributor at the plate, with 30 multi-hit games - the most on the team. He also leads the team with 49 RBI. Cord leads the CL in walks with 81, the seventh most in all of Minor League Baseball. His .379 on-base percentage is the third in the Carolina League.

Beat Those Yankees - If the K-Tribe is to hold onto the final playoff spot in the Southern Division they'll need to play great against the Northern Division. Kinston's final five series of the season are all against foes from the North. Problem is Kinston has not had much luck going 26-41 against the Northern Division this season. Kinston lost 2-of-3 to Wilmington over the weekend ending with a season series record of 7-13. Kinston has seven against Potomac (5-7) and six against Frederick (3-11). Kinston has a 10-10 record against Lynchburg, but has finished the season series with the Hillcats.
