Peacock Twirls A Gem Against Pelicans
August 25, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC- After dropping game one of their four-game series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the P-Nats needed a pick-me-up from Brad Peacock as the season winds down in its final two weeks. Well, Peacock held up his end of the bargain, tossing eight brilliant innings of one-run baseball to even up the series with the Pelicans, taking game two 6-1.
This game began as a pitcher's duel between Peacock (3-2) and Cole Rohrbough with each pitcher going through the opposing lineup with relative ease through the first three innings. Rohrbough (6-8) actually had a perfect game going into the fourth inning before Michael Martinez ground a double down the left-field line to lead off the frame. Danny Espinosa laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to get Martinez to third base, but first baseman Gerry Rodriguez dropped the baseball, allowing Martinez to score the first run of the ballgame.
The P-Nats were not done, however, as Jesus Valdez walked to put two runners on base for Devin Ivany who unloaded on a 3-1 offering from Rohrbough, lacing a double to left-center field to bring home two more runs and make it a 3-0 contest.
The lone blemish on Peacock's night was a solo home run from the Carolina League's leading power threat Cody Johnson, whose sixth inning blast cut the Potomac advantage to 3-1.
Rohrbough then settled down in the next three innings, retiring all nine men he faced, but once again he ran into problems in the seventh inning. Greg Veloz led off with a walk and Boomer Whiting reached on a bunt single to the right side of the infield. With Martinez back at bat against Rohrbough, the lefty hung another pitch up in the zone and Martinez lined it to left field for a run-scoring double to make the score 4-1 to knock Rohrbough out of the game.
With men on second and third and nobody out, Espinosa looped a line drive to left field to add two more runs to the P-Nats tally, pushing the lead to 6-1 which would be more than enough for Peacock on this night.
Peacock was sensational on the hill in his fifth Carolina League start. The pitching Peacock went eight innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run in his time on the hill. He struck out five and did not walk a batter to pick up his third win of the season and solidify his spot in the front of the Potomac starting rotation. He retired 12 in a row at one point and was thoroughly in control, hitting 95 mph on the radar gun multiple times throughout the night.
These two teams will be back here for game three on Wednesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 ET. You can catch all the action live on www.potomacnationals.com with Dan McGinn and Anthony Masterson starting with the pregame show at 6:45 ET.
