Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Salem, VA - Salem used a three-run eighth inning to rally past Winston-Salem 4-3 on Tuesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Luis Segovia, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out, two-run double off Charlis Burdie in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the Red Sox take the first two games of this four-game series.
Down 4-2 entering the ninth, the Dash attempted of a rally of its own as Justin Greene and Logan Johnson began the frame with consecutive singles off Kyle Fernandes to put runners on the corners with no outs. For the second consecutive night, Salem brought Robert Coello out of the bullpen. He struck out Sergio Morales before surrendering an RBI infield single to Joe Persichina that brought Winston-Salem within a run at 4-3. But Coello struck out Dale Mollenhauer and retired Tyler Kuhn on a fly ball to left field to preserve the win and record his second save of the season.
Fernandes (5-3) worked two innings of relief and was charged with a run on three hits, but collected the win. Burdie (2-1) allowed three runs in two innings of relief to suffer his first loss of the season.
The Dash snapped their streak of 19 consecutive scoreless innings when they plated a pair of runs off Dave McKae in the top of the second inning. Sergio Morales reached second base with two outs when he hit into a fielder's choice and advanced on a throwing error. It was one of three Salem errors on the night. Persichina, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI, followed with a run-scoring double and Dale Mollenhauer connected on an RBI single to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead.
Salem trimmed their deficit in half in the fourth inning when Zach Borowiak doubled with one out and scored on Segovia's RBI double. Dash starting pitcher Justin Edwards scattered eight hits and held the Red Sox to one run in six innings of work. He left with a 2-1 lead, but did not figure in the decision.
The Red Sox eighth inning rally began when Burdie walked Brad Correll to lead off and Anthony Rizzo followed with a single. After David Mailman popped out on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, pinch-hitter Chih-Hsien Chiang walked to load the bases. Will Vazquez tied the game at two with an RBI ground out and Segovia followed with the game-winning double.
The Dash and Red Sox continue their four-game series with game three on Wednesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Winston-Salem will send RHP Miguel Socolovich (3-2, 3.40) to the mound, while the Red Sox will counter with RHP Eammon Portice (6-7, 4.69). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
