CarL1 Wilmington Blue Rocks

Three Homers Lead the Rocks to Victory

August 25, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Lynchburg, VA - Derrick Robinson's recent power barrage has been as clutch as it has been unexpected. After going 895 at-bats without a home run as a Blue Rock, Robinson has left the yard five times in the month of August. The most recent of his dingers came in the seventh inning of a tie game, and lifted Wilmington to a 4-2 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Tuesday.

Robinson's heroics were made possible in part by Anthony Seratelli. With two outs and nobody on, Seratelli worked himself a walk off of Lynchburg reliever Nate Adcock (3-1). He then went to second on a wild pitch, and would be able to jog home from there.

That was because Robinson stepped into the box, worked the count full and lofted the payoff pitch over the right-field fence. All of Robinson's longballs have come when the switch-hitter has been batting from the left side, and this one put Wilmington ahead for good.

Danny Duffy scuffled his way through six innings for the Rocks to earn the victory. Duffy (9-3) did not have his best stuff, allowing a runner into scoring position in five of his six frames. But the left-hander was able to navigate his way out of trouble more often then he was victimized for runs.

Duffy surrendered a score in the first when Chase d'Arnaud doubled, and then was brought home on an RBI single by Jordy Mercer. Mercer went to second on a wild pitch, but was thrown out at the plate one batter later by Clint Robinson.

Lynchburg then added another score in the third. A lead-off triple by d'Arnaud got the rally started. He was plated on Jamie Romak's RBI single. The hit busted Romak out of a 1-for-21 slump.

But Lynchburg also wasted plenty of opportunities. Not only did it have a runner thrown out at the plate in the fourth, but the Hillcats also stranded a runner 90 feet from the plate in the third and sixth innings against Duffy.

It got no better for Lynchburg when reliever Zach Peterson entered the contest in the seventh. Peterson forced the Hillcats to leave a man at second in his first inning out of the ‘pen, and at third in the eighth.

Only closer Brandon Sisk was able to set Lynchburg down with any ease. The left-hander allowed just a two-out walk before nailing down the victory.

Wilmington's early scores also came thanks to home runs. Johnny Giavotella left the park with a solo shot in the first, while Clint Robinson added a dinger with no one on in the fourth.

But the game was decided on Derrick Robinson's blast in the seventh. The center fielder finished the night 2-for-4 with the homer, a triple, and two runs batted in.

Game three of this four-game set will be played on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Super southpaw Michael Montgomery (2-1, 2.70) tosses for Wilmington against fellow lefty Jeff Locke (4-8, 5.04).
