Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Aaron Peel hit home runs in consecutive at-bats as seven of the Kernels' ten hits went for extra bases as they defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks, 7-4, in front of 2,199 happy fans on Arthur Elementary Night.
Peel hit two solo shots in the first and third innings to lift his season total to six. After South Bend scored a run in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit, Aaron smashed a moon shot to left center to tie the game.
The Kernels added three more in the second as Warner Madrigal, Tommy Duenas and Sean Rodriguez all doubled into the left field corner to make the score 4-1 Kernels. Peel led off the third with a towering blast over the Randy Kuehl Honfidence Pavilion â the Silver Hawk left fielder just turned and watched it sail out of the park.
The Silver Hawks added solo runs in the third, fourth and sixth off Kernel starter Rafael Rodriguez (4-2). Raffy went 5 2/3 innings to get the win, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out four. Francisco Cordova and T.J. Stanton (S, 4) combined to allow one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings.
Cedar Rapids added insurance runs in the fifth, as Warner Madrigal scored on a Chris Walston sacrifice fly and in the sixth, as Alexi Casilla scored on a Freddy Sandoval ground out to first.
Game two between the Silver Hawks and Kernels is tomorrow night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels welcome students from St. Matthew's Elementary to the game as part of WMT Mix 96.5 School Spirit Nights. Stick around following the game for the Kernels' first Saturday Night Fireworks show of the season. Due to the 5 pm start time, fans can come down on the field after the game and play catch on the field with the Kernels and run the bases until it's dark enough for the fireworks. The concessions stands will be open immediately after the game until the fireworks start. Gates open at 4 pm.
