Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - Matt Campbell matched his season and career high with seven innings pitched, struck out six, and earned his first professional victory as the Burlington Bees (21-26) blanked the Dayton Dragons (20-27) 3-0 tonight at Community Field. Campbell (1-5), one of the Kansas City Royals 1st round picks (29th overall) in 2004, waited 14 starts over the last two seasons before getting his first win. Former college teammate Chad Blackwell finished the final two innings and struck out five to earn his first save of the season. The Bees have shutout their opponent now four times on the season.

The Bees got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Bees hadn't scored a first-inning run in eight games. Irving Falu led off with a single to right. With Falu running, Ed Lucas singled into left and when Ben Himes misplayed the ball for an error, Falu came all the way around to score and Lucas ended up at second base. Lucas went to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball. Both runs ended up being earned on the line of starter Jon George (2-2) when Rusty Brown lined a double to right-center field after the passed ball.

The Bees got their final run in the bottom of the third inning. Geraldo Valentin doubled to right-center and was on second with two outs and Alan Moye at the plate. Moye hit a slow roller out of the reach of a diving Bobby Mosby at first. 2B Mayker Sandoval ranged behind him to get it, but threw it behind George covering at first for an error that allowed Valentin to score, but Moye was thrown out trying to go to second to end the inning.

George worked through four innings and allowed six hits. Zac Stott pitched the final four innings in relief for the Dragons and walked two and struck out two without allowing a hit or a run. Miguel Vega was 0-3 for the Bees snapping his seven-game hitting streak and his streak of five straight games with a run scored.

The Bees and Dragons continue this series tomorrow night at 6:00 at Community Field. RH Billy Buckner (3-6, 4.08) will start for the Bees against LH Camilo Vazquez (2-2, 5.03) for the Dragons. The gates open at 5:00 for a Wendy's Family Night. Mom, Dad, and all the kids in your house get in for $14 and Louisa Communications will give away a bike to lucky fan 12 or younger. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
