Dayton Dragons News Release
Burlington, IAâ The Dayton Dragons (20-27) were looking to extend the team's road winning streak to a season best three games. Instead of extending the winning streak, the Miami Valley's team ran into a buzz saw. The Burlington Bees (21-26) and starting pitcher Matt Campbell (WP, 1-5) made quick work of Dayton, shutting out the Dragons 3-0 in one hour and 49 minutes, the fastest nine inning game in franchise history.
Jon George (LP, 2-2) got the starting nod for the Dragons with Rafael Gonzalez still on the temporarily inactive list. The right hander was up in the zone in his first inning of work, getting touched up for two runs and three hits as the Bees took a 2-0 lead. The rally for Burlington did not feature an RBI as the Bees scored one run on a Ben Himes error in left and the other on a Craig Tatum passed ball.
Burlington added a single tally in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead and close out the scoring early as a Mayker Sandoval throwing error scored Geraldo Valentin who had doubled and moved to third base on an infield single by Alan Moye.
Campbell made the early runs stand up. The Royals first round draft choice in 2004 picked up his first professional win after going 0-2 in 2004 with Idaho Falls and beginning the season 0-5 in Burlington. Campbell tossed 7.0 innings of shutout baseball with a half dozen strikeouts and two walks. The left hander allowed five hits.
Chad Blackwell (SV, 1) entered in the eighth and struck out the first two hitters he faced before allowing a pair of two out hits to Habelito Hernandez and Jeremiah Piepkorn. Blackwell ended the threat by striking out Bobby Mosby. Blackwell set down the Dragons in order in the ninth to preserve the save.
George tossed 4.0 innings for the Dragons allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. The Dayton starter struck out one and hit one batter. Zac Stott (ND) kept Dayton in the game with 4.0 innings of shutout relief.
The Dragons continue the four game series with the Burlington Bees at Community Field in Burlington, Iowa Saturday night at 7:00 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries Friday's game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM. The Dragons will throw LHP Camilo Vazquez, while the Bees counter with RHP Billy Buckner taking the mound.
