West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - Less than two weeks ago, Mike Ekstrom threw a complete game shutout for the Wizards only win in a four game series at Fifth Third ballpark. On Friday, Dallas Trahern went the distance and despite a ninth inning Fort Wayne run, defeated the Wizards, 2-1. It was the first loss of the season for Ekstrom, who went six innings, allowed all six Whitecaps hits and both West Michigan runs. Trahern allowed six hits, three walks and struck out two, while facing just 33 batters. West Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Brooks Colvin that drove in Nick McIntyre. In the fourth, the Whitecaps made the lead 2-0 on a two-out single by Brent Dlugach. Fort Wayne put runners at first and third with no outs in the ninth thanks to a lead-off ground rule double by Peter Ciofrone, a wild pitch, then a walk to Colt Morton. When Ciofrone reached third, it was the first time in the game that a Wizard had moved past second base. Manager Matt Walbeck went to the mound with closer Collin Mahoney throwing in the bullpen, but elected to stay with Trahern. The next batter, Tom Vincent hit a ground ball that produced a force out at second, but allowed Ciofrone to score and break-up the shutout. Following a fly-out to center by Lachlan Dale, Vincet was caught stealing second to end the game. McIntyre finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Go Figure: West Michigan has won four of its first five games this season against the Wizards, a team with a 26-20 record. Between series against Fort Wayne, the Whitecaps went 1-7 against a pair of last-place teams (Cedar Rapids and Burlington).
A Wiz: Friday's game was the second-quickest nine inning game for the Whitecaps this season.
