Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays allowed eight runs in the first inning to set the tone in a 14-7 loss to the Beloit Snappers Friday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.
The Devil Rays used eight walks, four Beloit errors and 13 hits to score seven runs but couldn't erase the 8-0 deficit they found after the top of the first inning. Rays starter Jarrad Lavergne surrendered six hits and two walks in his one inning of work. Only three of his eight runs were earned but the Snappers kept hitting all night.
Travis Schlichting and Patrick Cottrell each had three hits for the Rays. Josh Asanovich added two hits -- a double and triple -- of his own. Southwest Michigan left at least one runner on base in every inning and 16 total on the night. For Beloit, who scored 14 runs on 15 hits, left 10 men of their own stranded.
The game lasted three hours and 25 minutes and is the longest Devil Rays game this season. Today marked the third game this week that the Devil Rays have amassed 13 hits. They are 2-1 in those games.
The Devil Rays will take on Beloit on Saturday evening for U.S. Army Camo Cap giveaway night. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a cap. Tomorrow is also the beginning of the weekend-long tribute to fallen Battle Creek police detective LaVern Brann. Each ticket sold on Saturday, Sunday, May 29 and Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 will be matched with $1 by the Devil Rays in a donation to Sexual Assualt Services of Calhoun County.
The Rays LHP Jino Gonzalez (0-1, 5.40) will face Beloit LHP Alexander Smit (1-6, 6.18) in the 6:35 p.m. start on Saturday night.
