SAVANNAH, Ga. - Gregory Peavey and two Savannah relievers held Charleston to three hits as the Sand Gnats topped the RiverDogs, 1-0, in South Atlantic League action Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 1,050 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Savannah secured a three-game sweep and improved to 28-23 with the win, while Charleston concluded a seven-game road trip at 1-6 in falling to 22-30.
Peavey (5-2) penned 6.0 shutout frames to move into a tie for the league lead in victories. The Oregon State product authored 7.0 scoreless innings in his last outing and was nearly as good in this one. Peavey scattered three hits and a walk while collecting his 18 outs, fanning seven in the process.
Peavey and Charleston's Nik Turley matched zeroes for the opening three frames, until Savannah broke through for the game's only tally in the bottom of the fourth.
Robbie Shields scalded his 17th double of the season to left field leading off the inning, and was sent scurrying to the plate on Cory Vaughn's groundball RBI single.
Turley (2-5) turned in 6.0 sterling innings of his own, but was the tough-luck loser once again. Turley allowed only the one run on seven hits, while striking out seven. Tommy Kahnle notched scoreless seventh and eighth innings to keep the RiverDogs within a single run, but the offense could not get anything churning.
Peavey and Sand Gnats relievers Gabriel Zavala and Josh Edgin held Charleston without a hit over the contest's final six innings. Aided by a double play, Edgin worked around a leadoff walk to preserve the win and rack up his ninth save of the campaign in the ninth.
The RiverDogs return home to the friendly confines of Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Wednesday at 7:05 pm to entertain the Rome Braves. Right-hander Jose A. Ramirez (2-1, 5.06 ERA) is slated to toe the rubber for Charleston, versus fellow righty Caleb Brewer (2-2, 2.97 ERA) of Rome.
