Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

CHARLESTON, WV (May 31, 2011) - On Tuesday, the South Atlantic League office announced its Players of the Week for the time period of May 23 through May 29, and West Virginia Power pitcher Brandon Cumpton was honored for his work during that span. Cumpton was the league's Pitcher of the Week after going 1-0 with a spotless 0.00 earned run average and eight strikeouts during his one start at Delmarva on Wednesday, May 25.

Cumpton's week was an example of his entire body of work for the month of May. The Power starting pitcher went 6-0 over six starts during the month and held an ERA of 1.16 after allowing just five earned runs over 38 innings.

The right-hander struggled during April, going 0-3 with an earned run average of 13.83 before a brief stint in the bullpen changed the course of his season. Cumpton has since won six straight decisions while helping the Power to a 16-12 record during May.

The South Atlantic League also honored Jakob Dalfonso as it Batter of the Week on Tuesday. Dalfonso hit .478 for the Rome Braves last week with four home runs and ten runs batted in.

The West Virginia Power, a Class-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, travel to Lexington on Wednesday to open a four game series against the Legends. Cumpton is slated to pitch on Saturday in the series finale. The Power return to Appalachian Power Park on Sunday, June 5, at 4:05 pm to open a three game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds.
