Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws had their 5 game win streak snapped on Tuesday night with a 5-4 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds. It was the final game of the 7 game home stand for the BlueClaws, and they were trying to sweep the 3 game series from Delmarva. It was a close game all the way until the end when, but Lakewood came up just short in the end. The BlueClaws finished up the home stand with a very good 5-2 record, and have catapulted themselves back into the SAL Northern Division race where they now trail the Hagerstown Suns by 4 1/2 games.
Coming into Tuesday's game, Lakewood Starting Pitching had not allowed an earned run since Thursday, a span of 28 innings. LHP Ervis Manzanillo got the start Tuesday, and pitched 2 perfect frames to begin the ball game before allowing a run to score with 1 out in the 3rd inning. In all, Manzanillo allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 6 in 5 innings of work. He got a no decision. RHP Chase Johnson came in and relieved Manzanillo and got the loss after allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 2 innings of work. Johnson allowed the game winning run to score on an RBI single by Mychal Givens in the 7th inning.
BlueClaws 1B Jim Murphy had an unbelievable ball game on Tuesday going 4-4 with 2 doubles and 2 singles and 3 RBI. Each of his first 3 times up resulted in an RBI hit for Murphy, and he led off the 8th inning with a double to put the tying run in scoring position with nobody out. Geancarlo Mendez and Alan Schoenberger were also 2-4 in the game. Mendez scored twice and Schoenberger once. Lakewood outhit Delmarva 10-8 in the game, but the BlueClaws just couldn't scratch across enough runs in the end.
Lakewood hits the road and will be back at it on Wednesday in Greensboro, NC for the 1st game of a very important 4 game series versus the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Opening Day starter this year for Lakewood LHP Mario Hollands (4-3, 3.79 ERA) will get the start and RHP Zach Neal (3-3, 4.05 ERA) will throw for Greensboro. First Pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
