Hickory Crawdads News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - The West Virginia Power edged the Hickory Crawdads, 3-2, before 5,570 fans at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday afternoon.
The Power (25-25) got out to an early lead, plating a pair in the bottom of the first against RHP Luke Jackson (L, 0-1) and the Crawdads. SS Drew Maggi and CF Mel Rojas, Jr led off with back-to-back singles. RF Dan Grovatt then knocked an RBI double to right-center, bringing in Maggi and moving Rojas to third. One out later, Rojas came in on an RBI ground out by DH Cole White, putting the Power in front, 2-0.
The Crawdads (27-24) came racing back to tie it in the top of the third against LHP Colton Cain (W, 4-4) and the Power. LF Jonathan Roof doubled to lead things off, then took third on a sacrifice bunt. SS Jurickson Profar then was hit by a pitch, putting runners at the corners. During 2B Odubel Herrera's at-bat, Cain misfired and dealt a wild pitch to the backstop, enabling Roof to score and Profar to take off on the bases. Power C Elias Diaz tried to throw Profar out at third on the play, but sailed the throw to left field, letting Profar score to tie the game, 2-2.
West Virginia responded with a go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead. With two out and the bases empty, CF Mel Rojas, Jr. extended the frame with a walk, and then scored all the way from first on another RBI double by Grovatt, putting the Power back in front, 3-2.
RHP Ben Rowen dealt three scoreless innings of relief to keep the 'Dads within just one run, but the Power also received scoreless relief from RHP Vincent Payne and LHP Zach Fuesser (S, 1) to close out the 3-2 win.
