Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Rome, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets turned four double plays to squash Rome Braves rallies before getting late insurance in a 5-3 win over the Braves on Tuesday in Rome. With the win, the GreenJackets have now won their last four series finale games and take two of three from the Braves.
Just like Monday afternoon, the GreenJackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead through an inning and a half. In the first, Ehire Adrianza's solo home run gave the GreenJackets a 1-0 edge. Jeff Arnold doubled home two runs in the second to push Augusta's lead to three.
The Braves threatened to get back into the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Augusta lead to one. A double play ball in the fourth brought home a run while Elmer Reyes's sacrifice fly in the fifth made it a 3-2 GreenJackets lead.
GreenJackets starter Shawn Sanford allowed Rome leadoff hitters to reach in the fourth through seventh innings, but got double plays to escape threats in the sixth and seventh. A strikeout-caught stealing double play brought an end to a Braves rally in the sixth while a groundball double play ended Sanford's seven-inning run. Sanford (2-4) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four.
Augusta finally got insurance in the eighth when Josh Mazzola connected for a solo home run - his fourth of the year and second against the Braves - to push the lead to 4-2. In the eighth, Ryan Scoma's bases-loaded sacrifice fly brought home another insurance run to push Augusta's lead to three.
Stephen Harrold allowed an Edward Salcedo solo homer in the ninth and a Chris Garcia single before inducing a game-ending double play to seal the win and give Harrold his seventh save of the season.
David Filak (2-4) took the loss for the Braves, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings, walking three and striking out two.
Augusta will travel to Asheville for their first matchup this season against the Tourists in a four-game series from McCormick Field. UNC Asheville product Justin Schumer (2-2, 7.52) will come off the disabled list to make the start for the GreenJackets in a homecoming at his old college ballpark. Asheville sends righty Peter Tago (1-0, 3.27) to the mound to oppose. First pitch from Asheville will come at 7:05 with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Sunday June 4th to open a three-game series with the Charleston RiverDogs. First pitch is at 5:35 and gates will open at 4:30 next Sunday.
Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
