Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, GA - Greg Peavey and two relievers combined on a three hit shutout in the Savannah Sand Gnats' 1-0 shutout win over the Charleston RiverDogs Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (28-23) swept three games from the Dogs (22-30) and have now won nine of their last ten games. Savannah is five games over .500 for the first time in the 2011 season.

Peavey struck out seven and walked one in his six innings of work to earn his fifth win of 2011. He worked around base runners in each of the first three innings before settling in and retiring the final ten batters he faced. Peavey finished the month of May with a 4-1 record, a 1.75 ERA and 31 strikeouts against three walks in 36 innings.

The Gnats picked up the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. 2B Robbie Shields led off with a line drive double to left field and scored on RF Cory Vaughn's RBI single through the left side. Shields finished 3-for-4, his 14th multi-hit game of the year.

The Savannah bullpen of Gabriel Zavala and Josh Edgin combined for three hitless innings to nail down the Gnats' sixth shutout of the year. Zavala walked a batter in the seventh and eighth innings, but kept Charlestston off the scoreboard. Edgin used a double-play to erase a leadoff walk and then completed his ninth save with a strikeout.

The Gnats will look for their fourth win in a row when they welcome the Kannapolis Intimidators, SAL affiliate of the Chicago White Sox Wednesday. Savannah will send RHP Taylor Whitenton (2-0, 2.19) to the mound against Kannapolis RHP Matt Heidenreich (4-2, 5.93). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50 pm.
