Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Buffalo, NY) - A three-run eighth and Chris Dominguez's two-out, ninth-inning blast erased a four-run deficit for the Pawtucket Red Sox, but the Buffalo Bisons rallied back for an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth without hitting the ball out of the infield for the walk-off, 6-5 win on Friday evening at Coca-Cola Field.
Pawtucket was held to just two hits in the first seven innings against Buffalo starter Drew Hutchinson and trailed, 5-1, entering the eighth inning.
The PawSox immediately began to rally against reliever Bo Schultz (1-1).
Jantzen Witte walked and Mike Miller singled to put two on base for Dan Butler. Butler delivered a two-run double off the center field fence, collecting his first two RBI of the season. Two batters later, Ryan LaMarre grounded an RBI single into center field to pull Pawtucket within a run.
The next batter, Chris Marrero lined into a controversial double play to end the half-inning. He struck a ball that Bisons shortstop Jio Mier barely picked off before hitting the dirt and Mier's throw back to first recorded the third out because LaMarre was ruled to have slid off the bag.
PawSox manager Kevin Boles was ejected arguing the play.
However, Dominguez completed the comeback with two outs in the ninth inning. He hammered his first home run with Pawtucket over the center field fence.
Despite a double from the next batter Witte, Miller grounded out to end the top of the ninth in a 5-5 tie.
Unfortunately for the PawSox, it was the second time this month that a game-tying home run with the team down to its final out would not be enough in the end. (Chris Marrero pulled off the same feat in a 6-4 loss at Lehigh Valley on May 3.)
Buffalo mounted its rally against Wesley Wright (0-1) with help from Pawtucket's defense.
Matt Dominguez beat out an infield single to shortstop to begin the bottom of the ninth. After Alex Casilla pinch ran for Dominguez, the next batter, Domonic Brown, hit a chopper to second base. Witte, who was playing second base for just the second time in his professional career, could not handle the ball and everyone was safe.
The following batter, A. J. Jimenez, grounded a ball to Miller at shortstop. He hurried to step on second base but his throw to first base was high, allowing Buffalo to put runners on the corners with one out.
After an intentional walk to load the bases, Jio Mier grounded a ball to a diving Chris Dominguez who had no play to make. Casilla scored the game-winning run for the Bisons.
Ten of Pawtucket's 11 losses this month have been by two runs or less.
Henry Owens made the start for the PawSox, allowing one run on four hits and five walks in five innings of work. Owens stranded eight Buffalo runners on base in his outing, throwing 102 pitches in the process.
Pawtucket's only run against Hutchinson came in the first inning, when Chris Marrero walloped his team-leading eighth home run of the season. The eight long-balls are also tied for the second most in the International League.
After Owens departed, the Bisons rallied against Roman Mendez for four runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
After a single and two walks loaded the bases, Andy Burns grounded a ball into center field for a two-run single. Burns advanced to second base on the throw to the plate, setting up two runners in scoring position for Jesus Montero. He doubled home both runners, doubling Buffalo's lead to 5-1.
The PawSox continue their four-game series in Buffalo tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Righthander Sean O'Sullivan (2-2, 3.00) is scheduled to make his return for Pawtucket (after a stint with Boston) against Buffalo lefty Scott Diamond (3-3, 2.39). Radio coverage begins on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the Pawtucket Red Sox radio network at 12:35 p.m.
The PawSox return to McCoy Stadium on Tuesday to open up a six-game home stand against Lehigh Valley and Indianapolis. Good seats for the entire homestand are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
