Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs earned a 6-2 victory Friday night over the Norfolk Tides. Brian Goodwin was again electric for the Chiefs with three hits, a RBI and a run scored. The win gave Syracuse a second straight victory to begin a seven-game homestand
Syracuse (22-18) got out front early with another run-scoring first inning. Trea Turner led off the Chiefs' rally with a hard-hit double to center field, coming around to score on the ensuing Brian Goodwin single to center. After a stolen base and a groundout put Goodwin on third, a wild pitch from Norfolk (14-29) starter T.J. McFarland brought Goodwin home to give the Chiefs an early 2-0 lead.
Syracuse struck again in the second frame. Norfolk was forced to use its bullpen early when McFarland left after just one inning of work. Scott McGough replaced the starter and immediately allowed a home run to the inning's leadoff batter, Jason Martinson. The solo shot pushed the Chiefs' lead to 3-0.
Norfolk eventually tallied a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Michael Almanzar led off the inning with a ground-rule double off Syracuse starter Taylor Hill. After two quick outs, Mike Yastrzemski walked, putting Tides runners on first and second. The next batter, Trey Mancini, hit a ground ball to Jason Martinson at third, who elected to try and force Yastrzemski out at second. Yastrzemski was safe, and the bases were loaded for Dariel Alvarez, who doubled down the left-field line, scoring both Almanzar and Yastrzemski to cut the Chiefs' lead to 3-2. Juan Gutierrez replaced Hill on the mound, setting down Corban Joseph on a fly out to end the threat.
For the second straight night, the Chiefs had a multi-run seventh inning. Zach Phillips began the inning for Norfolk by allowing a walk to Scott Sizemore. Sizemore then stole second, advancing to third on a throwing error from Tides catcher Francisco Pena. Two batters later, Jose Lozada lined a run-scoring single to right field for a 4-2 advantage. Two of the next three batters, Turner and Matt den Dekker, walked, loading the bases for Matt Skole. The Chiefs' cleanup hitter grounded a two-run single into left field, driving home Lozada and Turner for the game's final runs.
The Chiefs search for the series win Saturday afternoon at 1:05. Right-hander Austin Voth will oppose Norfolk starter Odrisamer Despaigne.
