Toledo Mud Hens News Release

A night after the Mud Hens (17-23) and IronPigs played 15 innings of baseball, extra-innings seemed like a foregone conclusion until a fortuitous bounce and a Toledo fielding error led to a Lehigh Valley 4-3 walk-off win Friday night at Coca-Cola Park.

Five days after shutting out the Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field, Lehigh Valley's Jake Thompson, a former Detroit Tigers' prospect, pieced together another fine pitching performance earning a no-decision, going eight innings while allowing five hits and three runs and striking out eight. Not to be outdone Matt Boyd pitched a sensational six innings, earning a no-decision, scattering six hits and two runs while striking out nine batters, a new season high for Boyd, as he lowered his ERA to a miniscule 2.06.

Following an abysmal 0-8 at the plate Thursday night, Chad Huffman wasted no time, blasting a 96 mph fastball off the scoreboard in left field for his fifth home run of the season to put Toledo up 1-0 in the top of the second inning. However, in the bottom half of the second, the IronPigs' Andrew Knapp, a top-notch Phillies prospect, dished up a solo shot of his own to knot it up, 1-1.

Lehigh Valley manufactured a run off Boyd in the bottom of the sixth after Nick Williams swiped second base and then came around to score on a Cam Perkins RBI single making it 2-1.

Toledo's Casey McGehee made it 2-2 in the top of the seventh with an absolute bomb for his second home run of the season.

Dustin Molleken came on in relief for the Mud Hens in the seventh inning, but Lehigh Valley took advantage of Matt Boyd being out of the game, as Taylor Featherston joined in on the solo home run party when he ripped his fifth of the season to put the IronPigs back on top, 3-2.

The back-and-forth home run hitting affair continued as Tyler Collins lofted his own solo home run on an 0-2 count to left field, his third of the season, to tie the game at three in the top of the eighth.

Drake Britton came out of the Toledo bullpen to pitch the ninth, and he got the first two outs quickly via two groundballs. However, Carlos Alonso reached via an infield single and raced around to score after Wynton Bernard misplayed a fly ball to right field off the bat of Taylor Weatherston, as the IronPigs walked off for a second straight night, winning 4-3.

Earning the win for Lehigh Valley was Edubray Ramos, as pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Toledo is back in action tomorrow at Coca-Cola Park, as they take on the IronPigs in game three of the four-game series with the first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. The Mud Hens return home Tuesday, May 24 for a 6:35 p.m. game against Durham.
