Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Columbus, OH) - Four Pawtucket pitchers combined to limit Columbus to only one run by stranding 11 runners on base while the PawSox offense collected 11 hits en route to a 4-1 victory over the Clippers Monday night at Huntington Park in a game that was twice delayed by rain for a total of one hour and 57 minutes.
Will Middlebrooks, continuing a Major League injury rehab assignment, played the first five innings at third base and went 1-for-3 with a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth. Middlebrooks is now 4-for-15 with two walks in five games since resuming his rehab stint last week.
Matt Barnes (4-6), Alex Wilson, John Ely and Tommy Layne combined to allow eight hits and seven walks but limited the damage to a single Columbus run in the fourth inning. Pawtucket (47-46) won for just the second time in seven games this month and evened the series at one win apiece.
Following a one hour and 11 minute delay before the first pitch, Andres Torres led off the game against Clippers starter Kyle Davies (4-7) with a mammoth home run (2). But Columbus' Justin Sellers knotted the score in the fourth against Barnes with a two-out RBI single.
Middlebrooks lofted a soft RBI single to center in the fifth against Davies, scoring Corey Brown from second base to break the tie for good. Again the rains came before the sixth, this time delaying the contest for 46 minutes and knocking each starting pitcher from the contest.
Following the second stoppage of play, Pawtucket added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings against the Clippers bullpen. Christian Vazquez's RBI single in the sixth made the score 3-1, then Corey Brown's two-out RBI hit in the eighth added the final tally of the night.
Barnes allowed five hits and five walks in his five innings of work but stranded six men on base during his time on the mound. Wilson pitched two scoreless innings after the rains in the sixth and seventh while Ely stranded a pair on base in the eighth. Layne fanned the side in the ninth to earn his seventh save in as many opportunities.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night with first pitch at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Allen Webster (4-4, 2.86) is slated to start for the PawSox against Columbus righty Tyler Cloyd (6-5, 4.35). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
Following the ten-game road trip and the subsequent Triple-A All-Star break, the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a four game series against Buffalo that begins on Thursday, July 17th.
