Gosselin, G-Braves Clip Chiefs, 6-3

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - In danger of dropping their third straight game to Syracuse and facing the best pitcher in the International League in Taylor Hill, the Gwinnett Braves (43-49) rebounded from a 2-0 deficit and defeated the Chiefs (54-37) 6-3 on Tuesday night at Coolray Field. Phil Gosselin went 3-for-4 and fell a home run shy of the cycle for the G-Braves.

Things got off to a poor start for Gwinnett as the Chiefs scored first for the third night in a row. Jeff Kobernus jumped all over a 2-1 fastball from Atlanta Braves' right-hander Pedro Beato and launched it over the left field fence to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Beato worked one inning, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one in his first rehab appearance with the G-Braves. He tossed 18 pitches, 12 for strikes.

The Chiefs added another run in the third. Josh Johnson singled off reliever Gus Schlosser, stole second and third base and scored on an RBI groundout by Kobernus.

That would be the only run allowed by Schlosser (W, 5-4) on the evening. The right-hander went 6.0 innings, scattering eight hits and striking out two batters.

Schlosser's effort was backed by an offense that scored six unanswered runs from the third through seventh innings. Tyler Pastornicky evened the score at 2-2 in the third by taking a 1-1 offering from Hill over the fence in left-center for his first home run of the season.

Gwinnett gained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jose Constanza reached on an infield single and scored on an RBI double by Gosselin, making it 3-2.

The G-Braves put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs on four hits to take a 6-2 lead. Constanza reached on a single off Zach Jackson and scored on an RBI triple by Gosselin. Pastornicky and Joey Terdoslavich added RBI singles to cap the scoring in the frame.

Syracuse made it interesting in the ninth inning, loading the bases with no outs against right-hander Terry Doyle. However, left-hander Atahualpa Severino (S, 2) came in and slammed the door on the comeback as he induced a double play and fly-out to end the game.

Hill (L, 9-3) took the loss for the first time since June 8 at Buffalo, allowing three runs on seven hits over 6.0 innings.

Gosselin's three-hit night lead the 12-hit attack for Gwinnett. Constanza, Pastornicky and Terdoslavich each had two hits, with Pastornicky tallying three RBIs.

Kobernus led the Chiefs, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Johnson went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored.

The Gwinnett Braves and the Syracuse Chiefs conclude the four-game series on Wednesday night, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM. Right-hander Aaron Northcraft (0-0, 6.10) will start for the G-Braves, while the Chiefs will counter with right-hander A.J. Cole (0-0, 2.53).
