Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk, VA - Norfolk used a five-run fifth inning and a solid start from Tyler Wilson to rally past the Durham Bulls 7-4 Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Trailing 4-1 entering the fifth frame, Norfolk batted around against Alex Colome (4-2) and Brandon Gomes to take a 6-4 lead. The Tides collected five hits, two walks and a sacrifice fly in the inning, with five different batters registering an RBI. Cord Phelps, Francisco Peguero and Xavier Paul had RBI singles in the frame, while Brett Wallace added an RBI double.
The offensive outburst was enough to make a winner out of Tyler Wilson (1-0), who picked up his first Triple-A victory after allowing four runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work. Making his second start with the Tides, the 24-year-old University of Virginia product yielded a first inning run before surrendering a two-run homer to former Tide Justin Christian during a three-run fifth frame. Wilson struck out three without walking a batter, helping Norfolk snap a three-game losing skid.
The win was the 11th for Wilson between Bowie and Norfolk, most among Orioles minor leaguers. He also became the third different Tides pitcher to earn his first Triple-A victory this season, joining Suk-min Yoon and Mike Wright.
Evan Meek followed Wilson's outing with a scoreless inning of relief, giving him 12 consecutive scoreless appearances with the Tides. Over that span, Meek has allowed seven hits, zero walks and 13 strikeouts in 13.1 innings.
Preston Guilmet worked struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to register his seventh save of the season.
Phelps led Norfolk's offense with three singles - two of which drove in a run. Steve Clevenger added two sacrifice flies, giving him 24 RBI over his last 32 games with the Tides.
The two clubs will wrap up their series Wednesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. In a battle of southpaws, Chris Jones (5-5, 3.84) will make the start for Norfolk against Mike Montgomery (8-1, 3.30). Wednesday is Country Night at Harbor Park, with fans encouraged to wear their best country attire for a chance to win tickets for Rascal Flatts and Miranda Lambert, courtesy of 97.3 The Eagle.
