Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Moosic, Pa. - They rallied, they lost and they got rained on again. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) lost the opener of a quasi-doubleheader to the Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox) on Tuesday evening, 11-6. The resumption of Monday's suspended affair was promptly followed by the rain tarp. After a lengthy downpour that soaked PNC Field, the scheduled nightcap was postponed.

The RailRiders (42-49) and the Knights (37-55) will make up the rainout on Wednesday with a doubleheader starting at 11:35 a.m. Both games are scheduled for seven innings. Tickets from Tuesday's affair may be exchanged for any RailRiders home game over the rest of the season.

Monday's original action had starter Nik Turley post a perfect first inning while his offense plated three runs in the home half with RBIs from Zoilo Almonte, Kyle Roller and Adonis Garcia. The Knights responded by batting around in a five-run second. Andy Wilkins tied it with a three-run homer and Carlos Sanchez pushed the visitors ahead when his single up the middle scored IL All-Star Tyler Saladino.

Turley allowed a first-pitch homer to Josh Phegley in the third to round out the scoring. He was lifted in the fourth after successive two-out walks to Marcus Semien and Jordan Danks loaded the bases. Pat Venditte entered and induced an inning-ending groundout from Phegley. Turley allowed six runs on eight hits and three walks over his 3.2 innings.

The RailRiders stranded two men on base in the second and went down in order in the third against SWB alumnus Daniel McCutchen. John Ryan Murphy flied out to center in the fourth before the intensifying rains necessitated the original tarp. When play resumed Tuesday, no runs crossed until the seventh when SWB tied it up on a wild pitch and run-scoring blows by Yangervis Solarte and Almonte.

The deadlock did not last long. Charlotte batted around in the eighth and scored four runs to take the lead back. Michael Taylor's second homer was the go-ahead shot. The Knights rounded out the scoring with a run in the ninth on a Saladino single. Donnie Veal (2-4) blew a save but earned the win. Diego Moreno (1-2) gave up all four runs in the eighth and lost.

John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the radio call of Wednesday's doubleheader. The pregame show begins at 11:05 a.m. on NEPA Sports Radio -The GAME, Northeast PA's largest radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
