Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Rochester shortstop Doug Bernier had three hits, drove home three runs and nearly hit for the cycle and the Red Wings held off Pawtucket's ninth-inning rally to collect an 8-7 victory over the PawSox Wednesday night in front of 10,167 fans at McCoy Stadium, the largest home crowd of the season, in the opener of a two-game series.
Both Will Middleberooks (fractured index finger) and Mike Carp (broken bone in right foot) started for the PawSox as part of their respective Major League injury rehab assignments. Middlebrooks served as the DH for eight innings and homered in his third at-bat, a line drive over the left-field fence in the fifth. He finished 1-for-3 with a walk.
Carp played first base for four innings and went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts. Carp is now 1-for-13 with five punchouts in five games during his rehab stint.
Bernier hit an RBI double in the second to open the scoring, tripled in the fourth to start a two-run rally, then capped his night with a two-run home run in the seventh. Looking for the cycle in his final at-bat in the ninth, Bernier lined out to second base on a well-struck ball.
Pawtucket (45-43) trailed 8-4 entering the bottom of the ninth but scored three runs before Rochester's Michael Tonkin could record an out. Ryan Roberts' RBI single was followed by Travis Shaw's two-run home run to left (5), his third during the homestand that brought the PawSox within one run.
Tonkin then struck out Justin Henry, who was pinch-hitting for Middlebrooks, on a tough 3-2 pitch for the first out in the ninth. Rochester then brought in righty Lester Oliveros, who struck out Carlos Rivero and retired Alex Hassan on a hard grounder to Bernier to end the game.
The Red Wings jumped to a 4-0 lead by scoring four runs against Pawtucket starter Matt Barnes, including a solo home run off the bat of Deibinson Romero in the third. Chris Rahl and Eric Farris chased Barnes with consecutive RBI singles in the fourth. The righty allowed six hits and three walks in 3.1 innings of work.
The PawSox got a two-run double from Dan Butler against Rochester starter Sean Gilmartin (1-1) in the fourth to make the score 4-2. After the team's traded single runs in the fifth, Mike McCoy lofted a sacrifice fly against All-Star reliever A.J. Achter in the sixth to bring Pawtucket within 5-4.
The Red Wings plated three huge runs against reliever Drake Britton in the seventh, a rally highlighted by Bernier's monster home run to left. Rochester collected 13 hits on the night while Pawtucket had ten.
The PawSox ten-game homestand concludes Thursday night, as the finale of the two-game series is scheduled to begin at 6:15 pm. Right-hander Allen Webster (4-4, 2.92) will get the ball for manager Kevin Boles, while righty Alex Meyer (4-4, 3.61) is expected to start for the Red Wings.
Limited seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:00 pm.
