Norfolk Tides News Release
The International League today announced the members of its 2014 All-Star Team, and Norfolk infielder Ivan De Jesus Jr. has been selected to the squad.
In 67 games for the Tides this season, De Jesus has batted .304 with three home runs and 32 runs batted in. De Jesus, who has made 60 of his 67 appearances at shortstop, ranks 11th in the league with a .304 average and leads the Tides with 16 doubles. Earlier this season he reached base safely in 27 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in the International League this year.
De Jesus Jr. was signed by Baltimore as a free agent prior to the 2014 season. Originally selected by the Dodgers in the second round of the 2005 draft, he is the son of former Major League infielder Ivan De Jesus Sr., who enjoyed a 15-year career with seven different teams. De Jesus Jr. has appeared in 48 major league games between Los Angeles and Boston over his career. He entered the 2014 season with a career .300 average over 832 minor league games.
The team of 30 IL standouts will take on the Pacific Coast League's best in the 27th Annual Cree Triple-A All-Star Game on July 16 in Durham, NC. The matchup will be broadcast live from Durham Bulls Athletic Park on MLB Network, the American Forces Network, and the Triple-A All-Star Game Radio Network beginning at 7:00 pm.
Following last year's 4-3 victory in the Triple-A All-Star Game, the IL owns a 9-7 advantage in the 16 years since the event changed to the current IL vs. PCL format. The winning league this season will once again earn the right to have its champion play as the "home team" at the Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game which will take place Tuesday, September 16 in Charlotte, NC.
