ROCHESTER, NY (Wednesday, July 2 ) - Rochester Red Wings reliever A.J. Achter was elected to represent the Red Wings and the International League at the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on July 16, the league announced on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast nationally on the MLB Network, the American Forces Network and the Triple-A All-Star Game Radio Network.
Achter was elected to the game as one of two relief pitchers, meaning he finished in the top two in voting among ballots submitted by league managers and general managers, members of the media and online fan voting.
In his first full season at Triple-A, Achter has emerged as one of the most reliable arms out of the bullpen in the International League. He leads all IL relievers with a .124 batting average against - allowing just 16 hits in 129 at-bats. Achter has also allowed the fewest base runners per 9 innings (6.64) among all circuit relievers.
The 25-year-old right-hander boasts a 1.60 ERA in 22 games with Rochester and has converted all four of his save opportunities, while stranding 18 of 21 inherited runners.
The Twins 46th round pick in 2010 out of Michigan State is in his fifth pro season and second with the Red Wings after being promoted from Double-A New Britain last July. Since transitioning to a reliever full-time in 2012, Achter has pitched to a 1.97 ERA over his last 100 appearances across four different levels.
